MKII Airbox malarky
« on: 08 February 2005, 14:47 »
Righto folks,

Tonight I shall be removing my airbox to slean up my MAF sensor to try and fix my rough running problem. While the airbox is out I thought I'd get my trusty cordless out and drill some holes in it. My question is this. Where abouts shall I drill the holes to maximise cold air intake? I don;t want to end up drilling them in places where they are useless.

Cheers yall,

Rain

leave the drill and get a screw driver and remove the funnel that goes in from the front saves your airbox. if you want to go the drill way lift the box out and drill some holes on the side furthest from the engine so as to not get to much hot air in there.

I think you should leave the airbox standard and fit a performance pannel filter.
i drilled down the front and wing side of the box. drilled using the fattest drill bit i could find

Idles more rough in cold morning now
:)

Cheers dudes,

I shall investigate this evening. Not sure what that funnel is your refering to, but if I find it, I'll whip it off!

yer forgot replace the filter with a nice k&n or simular not a cheapy one.

if you open the box and remove the filter in the bottom is 2 tubesand a flap if you wedge the one at the front out with a screw driver means if like Blues starts to run abit funny you can replace it, i had simular probs with an induction kit and went the way of modded box.

the flap thingy is for warm starts where its really cold outside isnt really needed in this climate but bascically it blocks the cool air intake and opens the one closest the engine by removing the funnel or drilling holes youll get both hot and cold when its open i havent had any probs with it starting seems ok now and again i have to give it a little rev cause it sounds lumpy and then its perfect :D

The warm air intake on the airbox has got nothing to do with cold starts.
It works on inlet air temperature, if the air going through the inlet below a certain temperature then the flap starts to open until the normal intake is closed, and the intake to the exhaust manifold shroud is open, so hot air drawn in to lower the intake air temperature.
I would drill the air box front and wing side only, and put in a k&n panel filter. Also remove the trumpet inside the airbox as said above. You can also remove and plug the vacuum lines that operate the hot air flap, so it doesn't open at all, as also stated above its not really needed in this climate.

Well guys I removed the airbox and it would seem that someone has already drilled holes in it and removed the funnel. That might explain why I was surprised at the induction noise when I first drove it!

Saved me 20 mins with a drill and a screw driver!

all i ment is that in this climate you can do without it as i have never had mine connected and its only ever run badly with a K&N induction kit on.

Yeah i agree with ya mate.
I've had 2 cars which i've disconnected the warm air feed.
Its not really essential on injection cars.
