MOT Advisorys....Help!
« on: 18 November 2010, 13:04 »
Just collected my car from its MOT, well she passed but a couple of advisorys.

1.Parking brake 21% effiency

2.Nearside rear wheel stiff to turn by hand, further investigation required.

Would I be right in saying, these two things could be interlinked? calipers seized?

If so, is this a DIY job?

Don't use copper slip, remove the piston and clean it up.

get some silicone based oil and spray behind the rubber seal on the piston, dont use wd40 cos it eats the rubber.

also make sure the handbrake lever on the bottom off the caliper is freed off, that bits safe to spray with wd40.

to wind back the piston, put a pair of needle nose pliers into the notchs on the top of the piston, then put a screwdriver in to the jaws of the pliers to help turn, once you get it going you should be able to turn with just the pliers

dont know why they have advised the park brake on 21%? only has to 16% to pass so its well above that, i do a number of mot's a day and i'd say 21% is decent. as for the wheel being stiff to turn that probably is a caliper or pads stuck in, but that wouldnt make your park brake worse.
