I want to lower my GTI
« on: 08 February 2005, 13:04 »
Can someone help me.

I want to lower my golf GTI,

I have a set of 17"x7" TSW Apez rims with Avon tyres 205/40/17 and I want to lower the golf so that it just meets the top of the tyers, I don't want the wheels to go under the arches.
I think the choices are to lower it by 35mm or 40mm but not sure what one to go for and what looks best, also I'm keeping the origanal shocks, I was thinking of Eibach springs
does anyone else have this setup if so does it bounce around?
also I did have in mind to lower the front more than the back as the back is lower anyway but is this a big NO NO!!!!!!!

Please help

Oscar

Sorry Oscar, not here to offer any help! I'm just curious as I'm thinking along the same lines as you. I recently put some 17's on my mk3 but have not lowered it yet. Damn car looks like a tractor at the mo and the gap between the front tyres and the wheel arches is shocking yet the back ones are nowhere near as bad! I need to lower mine and was wondering if I should be lowering the front more than the back or not. The front looks like it could go 45-50mm no probs but the back looks like 25-30mm would be the most it would go.

Any help people??
What better time than now, what better place than here?

ive got 17 inch audi tt competition wheels on my m3 gti with 205 40 tyres lowered 60mm with  no arch mods  it looks great they are raceland springs and shocks on the car and i recommend them they have been on car for 5 years but they are makeing noises now so coilovers are going on,but i would not recommend lowered springs with standed shocks unless you are realy skint try the coilovers if you can

silly question I know but is coilovers those clamps that you put on the springs and tighten up to squash the spring to your desired hight?

Before you do lower your car oscar, i would think about speedbumps, my mk3 has been lowered with a 40mm drop kit (even tho i think it is more) And i struggle getting over speedbumps without bashing the chasis / exhaust.

Yeah but it looks like a monster truck (BIG FOOT 4),

I have loads of speed bumps round my way, I had a fiat uno turbo before lowered to the floor so I know what I'm letting my self in for but it's just gotta be LOW,FAT and RUDE

Thanks for the advice though

I think they should replace all speed humps with chicanes...............

FYI oscar,

Coilovers are dampers/struts that hold the coil at the bottom by an adjustable platform, so you can raise and lower each corner of the car as desired. A normal damper/strut has a fixed bottom platform and the ride height is varied by changing springs.

The clamps you are refering to squash the spring to remove the pre-load to allow the top nut (that retains the top of the spring) to be removed.

I've recently fitted Eibach springs and dampers on my car and yes I'd agree the front does sit higher than the back, just as it did as standard but just a bit lower. Might have to give the front springs a wee cut  I think the springs alone would be OK providing your dampers are in good condition, its perhaps not ideal for real performance driving but you'll get away with it.

Hope this helps
