problem with starting ?????

hi guys  could you shed some light  i have a mk3 n.reg ...... rite  the battery is new the starter motor is all tight ect the problem is sometimes when i start the car it just makes a clicking noise and the dash fades and resets the trip milage and time to zero and the engine sounds like it is not turning  if i keep the key to start posisition after a few seconds it starts as normal its doing my nut in  please help

Poor earth, battery voltage low.

so difficult to diagnose from a distance, but could be a poor earth? Do the headlights dim whilst attempting to start it?

the lights dim even if the engine running and i keep the electric window switch pressed to close them but the thing is there is plenty of power in the battery to start from cold after a frost i can take the ht lead off and it cranks over for ages without dying!!
