DSG problem, gearbox or driver error?
« on: 15 November 2010, 10:25 »
Before I continue to kick up a fuss with VW I just want to check that what I am experiencing is a gearbox problem and not an issue with how I drive.

I generally drive in tiptronic mode, but I find when changing to some gears (usually either up or down into 2nd at speeds around 30/40mph) there is a noticeable period of 1 and sometimes 2 secs before the car is able to put power down into that new gear. Sometimes the car seriously drops in momentum, I can feel something retarding the motion and a couple of times have been thrown forwards slightly.

The revs are not huge, am usually around 2-2.5k rpm so it's not as if changing gear is going to red line it. My only other thought is that it could have something to do with the turbo.

Any advice gratefully received.

Mine does this as well, but it is even more noticeable in Auto mode when I put my foot down. There is around a 1 or 2 second delay before it kicks into gear.

It's normal.  Just learn how to stop confusing the software.  Then blast off all those old pensioners in their manual cars.  A DSG is, in normal road use, as good as an extra 100 bhp.  Any time you want it.

Is it because, for example, you are in 3rd and the box has 4th preselected (expecting you to change up) and then you ask for 2nd and it has to switch cogs?

Same would happen in auto if you floored it in 3rd?

Well it should be expecting me to change down, after all I get this when going through change downs (4-3-2 with a small gap between changes)
Also I get the problem going from 1st to 2nd (and have a couple of times got it going 6th -> 5th)

I can understand it may have to select a different gear to the preselected one at times, but I would have thought that it would remain in the current gear until ready to change and not feel like it's put the brakes on and dipped the clutch.

Doesn't DGS have 1 clutch in 1st 3rd and 5th then another in 2nd 4th and 6th? Therefore gear up or down will always be preselected.
