help
« on: 14 November 2010, 18:32 »
I have just got a GTi 2.0 2001 model, parked it on friday and went to start it this morning, it wouldn't start.
The engine and battery lights stay on, but  there is no clicking noise or anything when i turn the key. Battery is fully charged. I'm not sure if it is the starter? can anyone help??

Hi, im not a VW specialist but i have worked as a roadside mechanic for some time, it sounds to me like the immobiliser, does the key fob work to unlock the doors? try disconnecting the car battery for 15 mins and re connect it, hope this helps

Hi thanks for the response. Yes the key fob works fine and I have taken the battery out and had it on charge for most the day. Battery charge = 12.25 volts when tested.  Any more ideas ?

factory immobiliser will allow car to fire then cut out, more likely to be starter motor fault or wiring issue. could be aftermarket alarm issue if fitted?
look at the motor itself, check red/black wire plug is connected and nothings loose. if it checks out, use chunky bit of wire to jump from battery +ve to the red/black wire terminal on starter. if it cranks over issue is wiring, switch or alarm. if not, starter is dead. put it in 3rd gear and rock the car, then retry, if that doesnt help give it a light tap with a hammer and try again.
