My GTI doesnt look like a GTI
« on: 14 November 2010, 18:24 »
as much as im loving my golf, it doesnt look like a gti, which is making me think if it actually is, but with it saying on the logbook, gti badges on it and a 1.8 20v lump (non-turbo), it must be?

however, its got 15" alloys, no spoiler, sits quite high like a ppl career, and needs a new exhaust

this is how its looks...

next yrs plans when ive got some spare money will be...

16" montreal alloys
spoiler
lower 30mm on jamex springs (£60 from online autosport)
new stainless steel custom exhaust (£200 from midlands exhaust specialists)
rear windows tinted (by a mate who works at halfords)
badgeless grille (bought by the gf)
remap

what do you all think?

thanks

I had a 3 door that colour, but mine was a 2.slow.

Yours has the later Avus 2 wheels, but as said before, and according to the sales brochures it is a GTI.

If it was mine I would go for 17" wheels with a suspension drop. Santa Monica's were a factory option from around 2002. 4Motion style exhaust with a valance to suit, Anniversary / R32 rear spoiler, but keep the standard grille. To do the badgless grille properly you need to fill the bumper recess and bonnet notch which will cost ££££ to do right.

I wouldn't spend too much money, and those mods you can take with you and fit on your next car. The 1.8T that you'll soon wish you had bought.

One more thing, loose the 1.8 badge and fit a new all siver GTI badge in the correct position.

thanks for the replies, i also plan on taking it to the bodyshop next yr for the bonnet, bumpers, new spoiler and boot handle to be resprayed, so the recesses in the bonnet and bumper wont matter when i debadge it, ill be colour coding the lower sections as well on both bumpers

As far as remapping goes, I wouldn't bother on a NA engine as the gains are minuscule compared to cost.  If you want more power from the engine you're really looking at basics of upgrading the panel filter and a decent exhaust system.

Then on top of that the more sensible options are to get the it gas flowed and port polished and tubular exhaust manifold blah blah blah...

A remap will release maybe 5bhp...
