Hi all, I have a '96 GL TDI, which has knackered suspension.

Picked up an original full VR6 setup with VR6 top mounts, etc. off a mate for cheap and I've fitted this but there is far too much play between the strut tower and the metal top mount plate.. probably about 10mm I'd say.

It seems the top mount nut is as tight as it'll go (windy gun now just caused the top mount plate to spin) and doing it manually using an allen key and socket we can't get it any tighter.


Where am I going wrong?! Are we supposed to use the metal top mount plate from a VR6 too or something?

The top mounts are probably knackered. Re-fit with new top mounts. Try to get Lemforder or VW ones they seem to last longer than the others in the marketplace.

There should be a gap between the top plate and the tower top but it should be in the region of 3 to 6mm.

If it were knackered top mounts, how would this cause the metal top cap things to sit so highly? Does the rubber expand or something?

Could the metal top caps be different for the VR6?

Care to elaborate please?

I basically bought the suspension set-up from a mate of mine who was breaking a VR6. He removed it straight from the car and gave it to me as-is.

I think you have a extra nut fitted under the metal plate that is not needed.

I think you may be right actually. To be honest, we didn't check the VR6 suspension, just threw it straight on.

I'll get one side off the car tomorrow to inspect/take some photos :)


What nut do you think I may have one extra of? And what should I have there and in what order please?

Looks like Wayne was right. We noticed when the weight went onto the suspension the top mount squashed up which makes the top cap sit higher.
