Urgent 1.3 Ryder engine help needed
« on: 13 November 2010, 16:04 »
My 17 year old brother has a 1.3 Ryder that he has bought of a """good mate""" a few months ago, he passed his test last week and after paying over 3k to insure it and having it on the road for 2 days the engine has dropped a valve and ruined the cams and nackered the cam cover bolt. As you can imagine it doesnt run right at all now and wont idle.

Replacement wise the 1.3's seem pretty hard to get hold off, and im yet to search the forums.

My question is, its the 1.3 carb engine. What options are there for replacement of the top end/engine (dont say ABF/VR6 :p) Or to fix the damage.

Thanks for the help. And yeah, insurance price of topic is crazy for 17 year olds these days for anything. No matter what car you try they want the world!

On topic, ideas?

I seem to remember a mate going on about the 1.4 Polo bottom end when he had a Polo GT. Might be worth looking at

1.6 transplant maybe? You may find the insurance cost will not change much.

Failing that, you could graft in a 5.7 V8!!!

I can't believe you haven't yet.

Chop chop, now.

Your young lad's best off shopping in Polo 6Ns I suspect.  Got plenty of them in our local yard and I doubt they're that different to the unit in the Golf2
Just because you're offended doesn't make you right.

Holiday cottages on the Isle of Wight for 2-10 people? PM me.

main thing to note is if its a later head it may not have the hole in the back of the head for the mechanical fuel pump. easily solved with some kind of facet pump or something. 1.4 ABD block out of a MK4 Golf, polo or seat is a direct swap apart from the pump issue above.  even if you do get a head with the right hole in it, make sure the cam is right too. later cams dont have the lobe on to drive the pump
