Wanna be GTI owner seeking advice...
« on: 13 November 2010, 14:59 »
Hey guys,

I'm looking to trade my mini cooper s in for a GTI Mk 5 DSG 07 plate onwards. I was hoping that you could maybe provide a few pointers on what I need to be looking for, anything I should be weary of from private sellers and dealers alike. such as with a cooper s timing chains are notoriously bad is there anything like this I should be checking???

thank you for any help,

hopefully within the next few weeks I'll be able to join in discussions as a fully fledged GTI owner

If your budget stretches to it, then go for an Edition30 DSG.

230bhp stock on a K04 turbo - larger potential for power if you are into modifying. - mine saw 380bhp with full bolt-ons

Make sure you do the normal checks, take it for a spin and HPi'd etc.

If you look in the linked thread below, there is a wealth of knowledge and advice for you to check out.

check the service book and see what was done at the previous service, if its close to 40k, check the major service has taken place, also a o7 or 57 plate will need its cambelt and maybe the water pump replaced so try getting one with it, also check the engine model, if it starts with AXX, check the tensioner chain is not making loud ticking noise! be sure the car is a UK car and not an import (this is in the first page of the service book). take it for a ride on the a road or motorway and push it to about 80mph see if it pulls to one side or if wishbones need replacing.... you will know by the feel of the drive! if dsg gearbox, test in sports mode and see the difference.

check the smell if cloth interior, there are some smelly people around! lol

good luck, try going for a 1 owner car then you know its been looked after...

Make sure the aircon works - just had the compressor replaced on my 58plate, quite a common issue on the GTI !!

Don't buy a laggy ED30.  Buy a real GTI and map it using superchips bluefin.  That way you get more power than an ED30 at lower cost.  Plus most ED30's are owned by people who seem to have something to prove, and by now are usually crashed, repaired and sold on.

They also look like a fat bird in lycra, off on the pull.

You do know you can remap an Edition 30

And the only thing edition 30 owners have to prove, is how much more powerful we are  :smug:
