VR6 into my mk2
« on: 11 November 2010, 14:30 »
I'm looking into dropping a different lump into my mk2. Thinking about the vr6 as they seem to be reasonably priced.

Does anyone know how to do it and whats involved?
I've noticed that some conversions keep the mk2 clocks and others don't. they use the mk3. is there a reason for this?

Have a look on the search function, also have a look in the dub rides and projects section as people are currently doing this conversion.

go to www.mk2vr6.com

plenty of guides and info on there.

easier with a CE2 electrics golf (hazard switch on the column, not on the dash)

a guy called "duff" on mk2vr6.com sells solid front mounts to allow  the original mk2 cross member to accept the vr6 engine without modification.  i thnk the rear mounts need a bit of chopping to get them to fit.

this is all so much easier using a donor car, cos you can transfer the hubs/brakes etc over aswell.

standard digi (1.8 8v gti PB engine) fuel pumps will be fine on a standard vr6 engine.

I don't think a semi will give the same results

MK3/corrado/passat VR6 clocks are generally used because they work with the VR6 rev counter signal out the box, whereas MK2 clocks wont.
To make mk2 clocks work you need to buy or make your a rev counter conversion cable. To make one you have to open the VR coil pack and add some wires to the terminals inside, then join all these together with resistors and finally run to the rev counter feed to the clocks.  This cant be done on the older ones with a coil though I dont think.

You are right(very rarely is RJ wrong!), the mk2 clocks cant be used with the early Vr engines, I found that out the hard way!

is it easy to convert the early ones to run a coilpack, or is there a bit more to it than just swapping it over and splicing some plugs?

Not sure, but I do know its not as simple as just swapping them over, think there are more sensors and extra hardware. I do know the coilpack version has no ISV.

nothing is inpossible,  sometimes it's just not that easy.   if you can get a tach signal in any way shape or form you can use it to drive any rev counter.  tho 3 pulses per rpm from engine and clocks wanting 2 pulses per rpm  requires you to make a widget rather than just connecting wires together to get a true reading.  logic cuircits are one way but a PIC and a bit of code is actualy easyer
