99 problems
« on: 10 November 2010, 17:40 »
But oil pressure buzzer is the one that concerns me the most. I had this problem a little while ago and have done had a read up on it so here goes.

Oil pressure buzzer has gone off twice today, both times over 2k. Last time it was the sensor but I have a feeling that today it has been from the cold on the drive to and from work, its barely got over 5 degrees Celsius here.

Please tell me I am right because I am broke!

Cheers

J

mine used to buz a bit in the cold but only when it was first started up, after a few seconds it would shut up. It would be worth you dropping your oil tacking the sump off and having a look at the oil pump to make sure its not blocked and is still working. Some fresh Oil never does any harm either

check the yellow wire, pull the boot right back and make sure it has a good connection to the spade and not split anywhere. if all good, should really get the pressures checked out, last thing you wanna do is an engine swap in the winter ;)
not that oil pickup clean and/or pump swap is much nicer, but still better than having to replace a trashed bottom end :)

Excellent, how does one check pressures? Do I need a device of some kind?

yeah can get oil pressure gauge setup, it needs an m10x1 thread on the end to fit the oil filter housing. a garage should be able to help you with this. alternatively just whip sump off anyway and see whats going on. just its nice to have an oil pressure test to confirm if you need to. it might be you have a partially blocked pickup which is why problem intermittent.

I'm assuming you have already checked the oil level?

If you are going to the trouble of taking the sump off, for an extra 30 quid or so, I would change the oil pump anyway. New pump, new oil, new filter...should sort the problem.
But first, remove the oil filter and very carefully cut it open. Remove the card consetina element inside and stretch that out. You are looking for bits of hard debris, white metal and iron filings. The iron filings may be a knackered pump in which case, spending the money on a new pump is worth the gamble. But if you find flakes of white metal too, that means that the iron filings have been eating away at your bearings and worn them out, causing your low oil pressure.
If there are none of these things present, then change the pump. You should be OK.

Mine use to do it cos the wires were the wrong way on the oil filter housing. (My fault after my engine swap) as soon as it went ove 2k it buzzed constant and the oil light always flashed what ever revs it was doing.
