I don't like aftermarket HID's either and it is about time they did something to regulate their use, but there is a straightforward reason why people do not get fined for using them.

For something to become 'illegal' there has to be an act of parliament or a legal precedent set - neither of which has happened yet with respect to aftermarket HID's. Therefore, they are not illegal.

If you read the Dft fact sheet carefully, you'll note that nowhere does it actually state that aftermarket HID's are illegal, only that it is "the Departments view" that they are illegal and "Under the Road Traffic Act 1988 it is an offence to supply, fit or use vehicle parts which are not legal".

All the talk about ECE regulations only applies to type approval of new vehicles for sale in the UK/Europe, so doesn't apply to used/privately owned vehicles. It also says that HID's are not even mentioned in the UK lighting regulations, so by definition they are not regulated. Until they are, they can't really tell you what you can and can't do with them.

The only part which does suggest you shouldn't use them is "In summary it is not permitted to convert an existing halogen headlamp unit for use with HID bulbs." However this again represents a view, rather than a law or legal precedent.

As for the MOT, it's not concerned with legality but with vehicle condition and safety, so does not consider things like the bulb design but looks only at the resultant function, i.e. beam pattern. Provided the beam pattern is okay and you have two of them mounted symmetrically, you could have nuclear reactors for light sources and you'd get a pass.

Intesting reply however most HID kits are marked for off highway use only to get around legal issues.

Sorry to bring up an old thread, and I don't want to start the whole 'legal' debate, but Kenny, how did you wire these up? I know you have the buy the bulb holders for them, can you take the housing out with all the connectors in and place it in the new holder or have you wired them up elsewhere? Want to get some fitted to my new Golf coming next week :) Also, any bulb errors?

I have never had any bulb out errors mate with them, i went for the "Ultimate Kit" from HIDs4u.co.uk, they supply the bulb holder free of charge with that kit aswell, but put a reminder in the delivery notes as they forgot to include mine.

I powered them from outside the headlight unit, I know some people have removed their bumper and taken their headlights out to get into the connection but save the hassle and do it the way I done it, 1 hour max to do.

Let me know if you order them up and I will get some pics and a wee "how to" for ya.

At work the now mate  I am off tomorrow mate, so will do a wee how to. Basically you want to get the power from blue/yellow wire and brown wire from the plug that goes into the headlight unit. Cant remember which is +ve and neutral sorry. Then you want to snip the ends off the HIDs ( parts that are meant to connect into the bulb holders on normal cars) and connect them into the blue/yellow and brown wire. I used terminal blocks, done the trick.

Sweet, cheers ma friend :D
I believe the blue/yellow wire is positive and brown neutral :)
I've bought some 20A snaplock connectors and self amalgamating tape to waterproof it all :)
The wonders of being management at Maplin hehe :P except the tape was like £9 for 10m :( won't even use it! I'll be doing a write up when I get round to it, probably a week on monday, did you have to take the bumper off matey?
