« on: 07 November 2010, 19:27 »
hi all,
first post on here had my mk3 for 5 months engine code agg, and just recently she started to cut out its really strange because she will die il get a battery light and oil light , turn the key she starts again! .(most of the time anyway!)

changed
 relay
distributor
 coil pack
ht leads
oil
oil filter
air filter

anyone have any ideas condition seems to be getting worse by the day? i had a late mk2 that had a very similar problem but was due to an in line fuel filter which i cant find the mk3?? anyone know were located??

Fuel filter is located under the car (passenger side I think) about the size of a coke can near the fuel tank. Also try cleaning the throttle body as this is a common fault.

its on the drivers side is the fuel filter

but i cant see it been that, id say it will be one of the sensors as they are known probs on that engine code, im sure someone will say which ones to check but id get it on Vag Com

It'll be the crank sensor I'd put money on it,put the oil temp up on your computer when your driving,if it cuts out at 76 degrees it's 98% the crank sensor, very common problem on 96/97 models with agg and abf engine codes.

Reasty is bang on the money, plus vag com will only pick up a problem, when the problem is actually happening if that makes sense..

It is something you can do yourself aslong as the Allen bolt that holds it in hasn't rusted, the crank sensor is located behind the front engine mount so this will need removing to get to it,you will need to support the engine with a trolley jack before you remove the mount,a crank sensor will set you back about £55 from eurocarparts,it's not a paticulary hard job but can/is abit fiddly.

Would try and get one from GSF instead of euro if you can, never been a fan of eleccy stuff from there. Had quite a few brand new sensors which dud and some which have failed within months in the past.
