I don't see the point of putting a GTI engine into a standard Golf when you can buy a GTI Golf. If you are going to do an engine swap, then make it one that does not come as standard. As already mentioned, 1.8 turbo, VR6 etc.
Also dont forget, you are putting in an engine to make it go, you also need to change things to make it stop so a brake upgrade is a must, plus having a high powered car with good stopping power needs suspention to be able to cope. See where I am going with this? If you are going to do a job, do it properly and be prepared to spend money. Money you said in your first post that you don't have. You need to plan a project like this.

i hear u loud and clear!!!

after my first post i thought about it and have decided to go with a 1.8 20vt for that reason why faff about 'making' a gti when i could buy one u are very right.

and i have thought about the rest of the car suspension, brakes, clutch, gearbox, clocks and other bits!!

would i b silly in thinking that gti sub frames would be straight swap?

my friend (the welder) also does a lot of car work and has some parts already coilovers, brakes and bits.

Subframe is a straight swap from mk2s and 3s (mk3 if you wanted 288mm breaks)

mk3 is wide track, but this is in the wishbones not the subframe. the engine mountings are different mk2 to mk3 as well, so you will also have to change the mounts, and the brackets that fit to engine/box. can swap just the wishbones to make car widetrack, mk3s fit straight on mk2 subframe. also need to change the shafts and the track rods.

brake wise can go up to 280 easily on mk2/3 4 stud bones, 288+ you need to do a 5stud swap for an easy bolt-on life.

Not if its low bhp, they come in 150bhp 180bhp 210 and 225 bhp the later two are basically the same, both remap the same etc, where as the first too are different turbos. Id go for the 180bhp one, cant remember the codes it comes in, AGU is one of them.
