Engine Knocking - 5/11/10 **Found the problem!!**
« on: 03 November 2010, 10:57 »
I drive a MK2 1.3 Golf......

I've just noticed a knocking noise coming from the engine, it seems to knock about once every second on idle but it gets more frequent with more revs. Sounds like something hitting something..... No idea what it could be

Any ideas? Sorry it's a bit vague but it seems to be coming from the block which doesn't sound good at all.

It is in need of an oil change, so if it's something to do with that I don't know, but it does have oil in it.

Any help/advice very very much appreciated.

Swap the oil out and see if you have any metal bits in it.

Not at all. You said it requires an oil change anyway, so might as well do that, and check the waste to see if there is anything metallic in it as you are doing it.

If there is what could that mean mate? Or could it be any number of things?

Oil change is scheduled for Friday morning..

Could be a number of things, but primarily I'm thinking big end bearings. Despite the name, they are not too bad to do, just a bit labour intensive.

Then again it could just be something like the engine pinking although that's a more tinny rattle sound.

I'm not sure its anything too serious or it would be consistent and more frequent? the knocks on idle are about a second apart. I'll ask my step dad to look tonight and we'll see what he says but I'll take your advice and get that oil/flter change done asap mate.

Just hope whatever it is doesn't get worse as I drive, only got about 15miles to do between now and Friday morning if that so shouldn't be too bad.

If it stops when it gets hot am I right in thinking it might be to do with oil circulation?

Well I drove the car the mile home still knocking, when I started it it knocked really loud a couple of times  then quietened down to the knocking its been doing already today. I checked the oil and it was well below the quarter mark, I'd say just above minimum, so I put some more in. By then I was rushing because I was due back at work and like a d*ckhead some ended up down the exhaust pipe (where it leaves the engine) so everytime I started it after a min or two the exhaust got hot, and black smoke came up from the oil burning. Not wanting it to set alight I left it well alone and walked back to work.

But it's now louder knocking when I start it (only once or twice), and then knocking the same frequency but quieter than on start up on idle about every second.

Really am p*ssed off with myself for managing to get it on the exhaust downpipe (if thats even the right name.....) because now I guess I'll have to leave it for a good while and/or give it a wipe of when it's cool before I can even think about driving it.

And that's if I should even be driving it with the knocking.

Could it be I just need to drive it a bit for the oil to get around the engine and stop the knocking, if that's the problem.

Really I have no idea I'm just so worried it's terminal or going to cause permanent damage that can't easily be undone.

Knocking sounds like big end bearings to me, I would avoid driving too far to be honest.

If it knocks don't drive it at all, investigate properly.
