Mk2 > Mk3 Calliper swap
« on: 04 February 2005, 10:00 »
Hi,

I'd like to upgrade my mk2 GTi rear calipers to mk3 items.
I've heard that there are slightly different spec mk3 calipers, and would like to know which ones would be most suited to my 1986 (early 8v K-jet).  I'm trying to avoid the ceased calliper syndrome - asfour in 2 years is too much!

Also is there any other bits and pieces I need for this swap?

Many thanks,

Ryan

Hi Ryan,

I guess you've decided not to sell it then? Sorry I didn't take it off your hands, but good luck with it. With a bit of work it'll go on for years.

I'm in the same boat as you Ryan. Mine being a 87 D plate with sticky rear calipers. From what I understand we need to swap the handbrake cables for 90 spec ones and then the calipers should work ok. they'll bolt straight on anyway, but the cable is too short for them to work.

I will get round to trying this myself 1 day

Cheers for the replies (and PM's)

Car is still for sale, but if I can get the bits together and sort it out on the cheap all the better.
I think it's a shame for it to be sat (especially now it's next to a skip) doing nothing.? It's too good for that - much better than my pesky mk1 rocco - which has 'issues' at the moment - literally! - steam issuing out!!!

If I've still got it come winter time - it will defo go back on the rd - scirocco should hibernate and get some bodywork attention - start of the resto.

Back to the matter in hand - the brake cables - do I need totally new ones, or can I adapt/reroute (as has been suggested) the ones I've got???
(I've got a spare pair of Goodridge hoses - left over from the rocco upgrade - as it only needed 4 out of 6 - can I utilise these whilst I'm at it? Or would a complete set be preferable?)

you'd need a new set of handbreak cables as yours will be too short, but i think they're only about ?7 or something. but other than that its fairly straight forward. you could use the goodridge hoses but it may be worth getting a set for a front disk only golf to get a whole set. it certainly wont do it any harm just haveing two in ther!
