Sunroof Welding/New part?
« on: 30 October 2010, 22:36 »
With my tax rebate coming within the next 14 days i'm back on the hunt for a Mk1 :afro:
Seen an ABSOLUTE Beaut! and im not sharing a link since i dont want anyone to pinch it :D

Just wondering how much it would be to get the sunroof completly welded over (As in deleting it)
Or
How much an aftermarket/OEM part would be to replace it since the car im looking at comes with just a hole. LOL :D

I look forward to your responses :)

You haven't stated if this is a factory fit you wish to remove or a hole left by an after market sunroof?  Big difference.  I dont think there is a part that covers this, would need to be frabricated or a section cut from a scrappers roof skin, however there is quite a bit to think about regarding the inside...  If this is factory fit then everything involved for the mechanism would need to be stripped out and you would need a new roof lining.  If this is just a hole from an after market job then you would still need a new lining.

Gayness :( was an aftermarket jobby that was taken out!
Guy ran this one for his daily so switched all the best parts out for his '79!
I'm sure i can run the same aftermarket part that he had in before if i can source another?
Would rather have it all welded up though :( don't like sunroofs. they leak!

With a major amount of work I have seen roof skins changed by unpicking spot welds.

Indeed.... chop the skin and get yourself one of these...

Click!

and on a serious note I think your sunroof idea is probably your best and cheapest option.  I wouldn't worry too much about getting the exact same one, you have a hole already so get what you want and trim hole to fit.  do a good job of it/look after it and it wont leak.

That Carbon skin look spot on! It appears to be on that AWD Mk1 dragster?
Hmmmmm i'm a pervert when it comes to things being smooth though :( May have to run around a few bodyshops and see what people can do!
If not its aftermarket sunroof ahoy! Then Black it out or something!

Yeah its the AK Bodycraft MK1 that was at Inters this year

700bhp 1.8T, 0-60mph in 2.4 and top speed of 180mph.  It can beat the Bugatti in a quarter-mile sprint.
