Bodywork & re-spray
« on: 03 February 2005, 14:02 »
Hey guys,

Have a few rust sponts on my new mk1 cab so have been thinking about getting them sorted and the panels sprayed. The thing is the paint on my car is pretty bad and faded due to a lack of respect from the previous owner (what an arese!) so if i were to get the few panels sprayed they will stand out from the rest of the car.

So I was thinking of getting a full re-spray and was wondering what type of price I can expect to pay. I did think about doing all the prep work myself to lower the outgoing but have never done anything like that beofre so am unsure.

Any advice anyoner can give would be cool

Matt

you'll have to phone around your local body shops for proper quotes but a good guide is ?100 a panel. possibly less if you have the whole lot done. i've had the odd quote of around ?600 for my mk2 and thats to sort a few annoying bits and just a straight respray, same colour.

I was quoted 2.5k  for a full respray and at that price i was going to let them strip the car.
Found a cheaper quote by half and i done the stripping which saved some extra cash and speeded things up.

leave bodywork to the pro's unless you have the space and time

I actually went to se this guy today and he told me i'd be looking at around ?1,500 to get the car stripped, rust removed and treated then sprayed and re-fitted with all the trims and lights etc

Was expectinge quotes to come in at max ?1000 but its real hard to find a company where I livwe to do it. Am now thinking about doing all the prep work myself and gettign someone to just spray the car which will hopefully reduce costs.

If anyone has a contact in Shropshire please pass it on. Cheers

Matt

Prices do vary and so does the work they do

make sure you see some previous work so you know your getting a top job for your money! just because they are cheep or over priced it does not mean your going to get a top job.

We all want the best for our cars so a bit of research will not go a miss

I have just landed a job working for a body shop so guess what im going to get em todo??   respray

i just got a price today for:

bonnet
eye brow(the cars not my own)
bar under the head lights
front bumper
both doors(spray shop to supply new doors)
rear quater
bottom leading edge of the boot

think thats about it, got a quote of ?450 from the first spray shop i went to, then decided the place looked like a sh!t hole!
so i went to another shop who quote my ?740 for the same job and there going to take all the part off and paint the parts off the car and put them in the oven to bake them properly!!

sounds like they do a great job, had a look round the spray shop and it was really clean, the whole place looked like the type of place i was looking for, so its going there next week to get the job done, ive been told it will take 4-5days,
cant wait to get the work done, the cars going to look like its just rolled out if the VW show room!

I suggested doing a full underbody reseal to the shop because i didnt want to spend all that money on the car to have the floor rot and fall out 5 years later. However he talked me out of the idea of a reseal because by the time its all shot blasted and stripped back you probably will cause more damage or problems than its worth so he advised on a waxoil over the top instead.
