Horn issues (again!!!)

Hey guys,
Got my MOT at 3.00pm and the horn isnt working.
Ive had problems with it previously, that I fixed but its stopped working again.
The relay clicks when the horn is pressed, but no horn.
The horn itself is fine as it sounds when jumped directly to the battery and im getting just over 12 volts at the horn wires when the button is pressed.
Im stumped and dont know what else there is to check???

For the MOT just sling a (fused) switch in straight from the battery if you can't find the fault.

Check the earth connection for the horn. Clean up the contacts or mounting with a file / sandpaper.

I asked for that!!!
I've tried cleaning the contacts and they are all gleaming, where is the earthing point for the horn?

For the MOT just sling a (fused) switch in straight from the battery if you can't find the fault.

Thought about this, but have no idea how. Do you have an idiots guide for doing it??

Wire from 12v+ on batt into cabin with an inline fuse > Push button switch from maplin > 12v+ back through to horn. Earth strap from horn - terminal to a good earth on the chasis. Job jobbed.

Cheers mate sounds simple enough.
Gonna have a quick final look and if not grab the parts on the weekend.
Bet the horns gonna be the last of my worries come 3 oclock when i have a fail list as long as my arm!!

It will be however the horn itself attaches to the rest of the car. Remove and clean.

the earth for the horn is thru the horn switch. the horns get ignition live feed at all times. if the relay clicks, the wiring is fine. what it could be is horns are old and worn and need more power to sound than is getting thru the old wiring. put 12v to the +ve side of the horn from the battery, but leave the -ve wire connected. if they wortk, you know the issue is from the live side.  if not, swap trhe procedure, use std live wire and earth the horn to the battery. if that works, you know the issue is with the live wire.

try swapping the 53 horn relay with another one to start with.  if that doesnt help make a horn relay loom same as you would make a headlight relay loom, except trigger the relay weith the earth wire from the old horn loom instead.

horn need a lot of power to work, i fitted a gti horn to my driver and it couldnt run it with the engine off, you had to switch the engine on to give it enough power. i hadn't fitted a relay at the time which was the reason why

Agreed...

I've had to run new earths to a couple of mk2 horns, never a live tho....although it isn't out of the question i guess....
