Mk5 GT TDI & Audi A3 170bhp Advice
« on: 28 October 2010, 20:08 »
Hey, just looking for some advice on a new car.

Possibly looking at a Golf MK5 GT TDI 170 or an Audi A3 S-Line 170.

I'm leaning more to the Audi as I prefer them and seem to get quite a nice spec.

I'm wondering what sort of power I could see from a remap and whether there are any known issues with these engines?

Speak to Rhyso, I believe they have issues with the DPF pipe and this an also cause problems with remaps.

If it is a PD engine and not the more recent CR it will have a DPF.

These do tend to cause issues with remapped cars, however there is a solution. You can remove the DPF and replace it with a Milltek bypass pipe. The regeneration process is then mapped out of the ECU, add that to a performance remap and you will be looking at anything between 220-240bhp with better fuel economy.

JBS in Chesterfield seem to be the only company to date that have successfully sorted this mod, so may be worth a call. From memory the pipework and software fully installed costs around £800, which is less than a replacement factory DPF.
Red Mk6 gone replaced with a white Mk7 which has gone too. Green Mk2 here to stay.

Only tend to cause issues if you don't give the car a good thrashing every now and again

A remap will see around the 195bhp mark.  With the DPF removed its over the 200bhp mark

I was in the same position as you a couple of months ago and went for the Audi simply because I thought it was better looking, better built and came with a few extras for the same price as a MK5.  Only real difference is that the Audi's tend to be 6-12 months older but if you shop around you can pick them up with similar miles and money

Ah thats good advice. I was looking at an 06 plate. Will that have a DPF? Other than that how are they to live with? Good on fuel?

140's pre 2007 did not have the DPF.  I'm fairly certain all 170's were fitted with the DPF but don't quote me on that  :undecided:

Absolutely love mine.  Fuel wise its not fantastic in all honesty although its not far off what my old Golf was.  500 miles to a tank is do-able.  Performance wise its on a par with my MK4, but the biggest difference is that the chassis keeps you on the road so as a point to point machine its faster than my old Golf

As a car overall its bloody brilliant but then you should expect that when comparing a 9 year old MK4 to a 3 year old Audi

I test drove the MK5 and whilst it drove well (exactly the same as the Audi) I felt it wasn't 'finished' in terms of the interior and exterior.  i.e. only 17's compared to 18's, dual climate as an option rather than standard, fully colour coded body kit etc etc
