hi,so have located fan switch, temp gauge sender.

still cant find temp sensor but have ordered one so we will see better when it arrives.

my car is a 1997 and it looks like vw have revised the location ,

i can see where it would normally go,but mine has a proper fitting bung.hence no wires attached

my spark plugs are sooty indicating it is running rich

i will report back with any more updates

thanks

how very odd.  Do you think somebody's been messing with it??

Keep us updated, sounds like progress so far!

You only ever need two tools in life. If it moves and it shouldn't use Duct Tape. If it does not move and it should, use WD40.

on a 16v the sensor is screwed directly into the side of the head. there are 2 there, the black single pin one is for the dash, the white 2 pin one is for the ecu (well, its supposed to be white, might be dirty brown now )

the blank you mention is where the aircon temp sensor would go on a/c equipped models :)

hi ,water temp sensor was fitted to side of block with white block connector (as stated by rubjonny)

Changed this today ,,still the same,, the garage next door has done some checks and they are now convinced that the head gasket is the culprit.so i have left them to change it ,,they are good guys ,so i hope i will get my car back soon and all will be ok.

its been a expensive month, new discs and pads all round, water pump, all the belts, plugs, leads, cap and arm ,,and tax mot and insurance.

good job i am very fond of my golf
