Haynes & Halfords
« on: 02 February 2005, 18:47 »
I know this isn't exactly VW Chat, but its car related and I refuse top post it in Nonsense. Cause its not nonsense.

I know we all have to hate Halfords cause the rhyming slang for Halfrauds is just too good an opportunity to knock something, however, they went up in my estimations the other day.

I went into get a new headlight bulb, i don't buy these things 1 at a time as i hate cars that have "odd" headlights. So i bought two "Brilliance" bulbs at ?9.99 each. 30% brighter they say! Went to pay for them and the assistant instantly said - buy the Super Briliiance bulbs and you get 2 for 1. The SB bulbs are ?12.99 each (50% brighter they say), so overall i saved ?7. I then came back and apparently i qualified for a free umbrella as well, something the original assistant had to tell the person who was now serving me.

So, full marks to Halfords for that, and especially the blonde thing with purple bits in her hair.

I also purchased a CD off eBay a few days ago. It was meant to be a workshop manual. What arrived was a dodgy CD with pdfs from a Haynes manual!

I dislike copyright infringement. It is outright theft.

So I called Haynes.

Haynes thanked me for my vigilance and offered me any manual free of charge in their range as a way of expressing their gratiude.

So, if you want a free manual from Haynes - buy a dodgy ?5 CD off ebay, and then report the seller ;-)

Just as a contrasting report on how crap halfords are, I (stupidly) took my car there for a service back when I was young and foolish, however, I had only just joined the world of work and therefore wasn't earning bucket loads, and just got a mk3 1.6 litre rolling stones special edition golf, I took it there becuase it was cheap for a full service, ?120 if I remember rightly probably about 3 or 4 years ago now, picked the car up it was fine....next service due 10,000 miles later and the garage I took it to (not halfords) rang me telling me that the last person who took the sump plug out cross threaded it and basically the screw just dropped out as he unscrewed it, therefore the screw was knackerd and so was the thread on the sump.

He said I can do 1 of 2 things - bodge repair it, which will hold but it will cause probelms next time or get a new sump, the latter option i went for.  The car was in there for 4 days (admittedly it was over a weekend, 2 days of it) and a final bill of ?330 for a ?90ish service it should have cost.

I went back to halfords with the sump, this is the happy ending, and they refunded me ?150 cash!  I shouldn't have been so tight to start with, 40% of the staff were the rejects I went to school with.

Had the mechanic who offered the "bodge job" never heard of a helicoil ? Quite the common practice when sump plugs are stripped, even the dealers do it.
Anyway, enough off-topic.. i had the same 2 for 1 deal on bulbs at halfords 2 weeks ago !

about 6 months ago booked a mot at halfords as it was the only place doing mot's on a saturday and needed to drive the car to a show on the sunday.
Well anyway they refused to give it a MOT cause it didn't have a cat what the f**k
a 1978 car needs a cat I think not, tehy said cause it had a 1999 engine it needed the cat lol I knew this was crap but they wouldn't have any of it!

So on teh monday morning I made a nice complaint about them and how they don't even know the rules, I never heard back nore did I get a sorry!

So teh service/mot side is cr*p in my book!

i agree with you regarding that, but they are seperate counters, and they have a whole new super class of morons on the service counter.

i booked in the bravo a few years ago, took the car in on the day, and they had no notes of it being booked in!

the reason i was pissed off was because it was the only day "they could book me in" and it was the one day i needed the car - and so I had actually arranged to hire a car on the same day! first and last time i used their service dept.
