New GTI owner - questions and help please
« on: 24 October 2010, 18:09 »

Hi everyone, I collected at MK5 GTI (May 2006) over the weekend, I've got some questions below, but
firstly here are the all important specs;

- Tornado Red
- 18" Monza II wheels
- RCD500 + 10 speakers
- Multi function steering wheel + highline computer
- Convenience pack 1
- Parking sensors
- Blue glass (lucky I think, but no chrome ashtray etc)

Questions:

1. After a spot of waxing with collinite 476, the cloth I was applying
the wax got a bit red, this is the first time I have seen this colour
transfer after using collinite on lots of different colours including
a grey MK5.

I'm a bit worried this paint is VERY VERY soft?

2. Cambelt, it's four years old but only has 7,000 miles. What's
the latest thinking about cambelt change?

3. Should I consider any other preventive maintenance? I can see
receipts for annual servicing including a brake fluid change. I've read
about newer DV valves for example.

4. I'm going to get some 17" Monza's for winter, can anyone tell me the
official tyre pressures from their filler flap? I think it says 2.3 BAR for the 18"s.

Many thanks

VAG paint is known to be quite hard. Not sure where the colour transfer came from. Has it ever been resprayed or had touch up work on it?

Can't recall the mileage but all GTIs should be on Time and Distance servicing hence despite low mileage, four years is earlier and hence should be replaced.

DV doesn't need to be replaced unless the diaphragm is torn. Other preventative measures is to ensure it is regularly serviced and driven!

I believe the cam belt is due @ 4 years no matter what the miles.

Thanks, I'll get it booked in for a belt change, should any other bits and pieces be looked at the same time (tensioners etc)?

Correct. 4 years or 60K.

The standard DV will be fine for a standard GTI. If you remap it though I would highly suggest you get the latest revision DV from VW.

If you are seeing red on the cloth when waxing, then it looks like the car has been resprayed at some point.
All colours including solid colours have a clear coat top layer,.
My MK5 was tornado red and even with machine polishing I never saw any red on the polishing pads.

There seems to be lots of different opinions on the cam belt. My dealer said 120000 miles or 6 years.
I traded mine in to the same dealer after 5.5 years and 70000 miles on the original belt.

regarding paint

could be that its had that horrible paint coloured wax/Tcut polish crap used on it at some point

also worth remembering these along with the MK 6 have terrible quality paint (chips real easy etc)
I'm a happy happy person and love everybody.

Agreed got mine done after 4 years, some things aren't worth the risk.

My dealer said 120000 miles or 6 years.

When did your dealer tell you this?

It has been revised since the MK5 was released and is now 60k or 4 years (its been this for some time now) for the exact reason Wayne said, the belts degrade over time regardless of mileage.
