Uh oh! Clutch?
« on: 23 October 2010, 12:27 »
Driving home yesterday, going over a roundabout and changing gear - *crunch* "oops, must have missed the gear, let's try again" Put it back in gear and it just revs like f**k as I slowly come to a stop, so I stick it in 1st, try pulling off and it just keeps revving.
The car seems to get into gear, but there's no biting point, no contact at all. Is this the clutch?
Is it an expensive job?  :undecided:

(After 2 hours the RAC towed me to a pub where I waited another 2 hours for a flatbed, so it wasn't that bad!)

It can only really be the clutch..
I did mine some months back and replaced the cars first original clutch with a LUK product that was absolutely identical to the OE part that came out, and works perfectly, I also changed the cable just as a matter of course.. I think I paid around £58 for the clutch, but fitted it myself, wouldn't have thought that a garage would charge any more than 4-5hrs labour.. so somewhere around the £200+ mark should be expected...

Cheers for the clarification Thom
Is it a simple DIY job?
What actually happens to the clutch when it breaks, is it touchplates?

Clutch wearing out is the same principal of your brake pads wearing out, they need meat on them to work properly
Doing a clutch swap is the same sort of job as having the engine out, so unless your confident, and practical, I wouldn't recommend it, and is best done on a 2 post lift... have ago yourself if you fancy it, and use axle stands!

Hi mate

Cost me £80 for mine fitting in sunny Sheff, labour only obviously, but that was cheap as it comes, had prices of over £200.

All the best

I got a pit in my garage, will the clutch be easily accessable from underneath, so I don't have to take the engine out?

hi clutch is easy job on a mk2 simply disconnect bottom ball joints via 3 13mm bolts remove hub nut 32mm i think and spline bolts on inner cv joints remove drive shafts unbolt starter remove battery and reverse light wiring unbolt earth wire very important to make sure you reconnect this properly have seen a few forgotten and blow ecus up disconnect gear linkage and clutch cable if its the ratchet type throw it away and put a new one on. empty gearbox oil. remove drivers side cv cup from gearbox so the box clears the flywheel un bolt gearbox mount unbolt gear box and try not to drop it on your head prefferably two people to take the box out. remove flywheel and clutch replace with new. refitment is the reverse of removal. but before you do all that have a look underneath and make sure the is no oil dripping out of the bell housing coz the rear main oil seal might be your problem soaked clutch in oil means clutch slip. ie:- engine out job
