Accel cable, revs stick after high revs? gti 16v Helppp

Hi guys, ive got a bit of a problem, when i acceleate quickly or ive put my footdown on the motorway above like 4000 revs my accelarator tends to stick and the revs stay high until i put my foot down again and then it goes back to its normal idle speed. im guessing that its a problem with the accel cable? anyone had thois problem before or anytips or ideas before i try playing around with it, dont wana take it of an its something simpler than it it is..

Try cleaning the throttle body connection in the engine bay. It could be covered in crap and not recovering properly. However, it is more likely that the cable has stretched, this can be adjusted slightly but it would be better replacing it.

9 times out of 10 its the cable doing it, but have a look. another thing it could be is summat catching on the rubber hose jubilee.  have a look at the pedal end, see if throttal pedal arm is bent at all. new cable is cheap and easy to replace, makes a massive difference to pedal feel too

I had this problem. It was the accelerator cable. It was frayed near the pedal and catching on the shroud so not fully retracting if you pushed it past a certain point.

New cable from GSF was less than £20 and pedal felt much lighter afterwards. Felt like a different car! 

I also oiled the throttle assembly for good measure but it was definitely the cable.
