PAS squeking again!

Just been reading a few post on various forums to try and see if i can figure out what the problem may be!

I thought my PAS pump had gone a couple of months ago and took it to Vee W services who checked it over said all the belts were fine no slipping and they adjusted then tension.

Now recently its been playing up again! stationary really hard to turn and squeeks to hell, again been trying to find posts on what to do just been out and checked the belts and the tension seems fine i did read a post on the mkii owners forum a guy had a similar problem to mine had it checked and ended up changing the PAS pump and all was solved Ive got a feeling this may be the case

any suggestions? or just be done with it and replace the pump with a new one

personally i would check the fluid levels, then replace the belt.  if the problems still there, replace the pump & hopefully thats job done but vw say thats all ok 

maybe your getting moisture on the belt which is making it slip? thats why vw didnt pick anything up?

If the belt's tight and everything looks fine it may be after 20 or so years your PAS pump has gone.

Yeah as said the belts all seem fine and as tight as they should be, me and horney looked at it a while ago and again belts seem fine, the belt wa replaced before I bought the car back in feb, as you say DH after 20 yrs it may have had enough!

Bear in mind, the tensning mech is dire, so it wouldn't suprise me if t worked loose.

There should be something like 10mm deflection in the belt.

Usually if the belt is slipping, the steering feels really notchy

Try replacing the PAS fluid, use a syringe to suck some of the fluid out to see if its dirty. you might be able to get a few more years out of the pump. try a different make of belt, i havent got pas but i had a continental belt from ECP on mine and i was forever adjusting it because it was squealing, a QH one is fitted now with no problems

yeah read its supose to be 10mm and when i checked it had about that much give in it, its only when im stationary once the car is rolling its fine

i set em to 5mm, seems to work for me. if you run out of adjustment you can fit a mk3 pas pulley which is ever so slightly larger diameter, gives you a bit more tension on the belt if you need it. had this issue on my mates mk2, not sure why assume belt wasn't quite right.

pump and fluid only things left then matey, if u try all else like rubjonny's advice too. mine is the same its just mines in bits at the mo so i havent bothered looking at it.

I ended up fitting a belt that was too small to even get over the pulleys to maintain tension. It just means that getting the crank pulley/pas pulley has to be removed to get the belt on.
