Cutting out (1.4)

had a few problems recently with my 1.4 sometimes pulling up to traffic lights or starting up mainly it cuts out, then takes a while to get booted up again with it ticking over and revs climing slowly untill ticking over at 1thousand and being able to drive off.
few things i though that might effect it is sub and sterio but only 240w amp in the back and switched off when i start.
rip in pipe from exaust manifold to air filter but patched up with duck tape as a tempory fix, but doubt this one to be honest.
apart from that im stuck no idea what so ever had a quick look around seems ok, most of the time it starts perfect just now and again it will cut out which i would rather do without!

could be your ignition switch if it cuts out..i did hav a similar problem where my golf 1.4 would start but then cut off, so check that, i heard its a common problem aswell, or research on the carb/throttle body, on the forum
hope this helps

my 1.4 always did this, just take the throttle body off and give it a good clean. Give it a few miles runaround to adjust itself and it should be sound

what can you use to clean the throttle body? an how do you take it off, mine could do with a bit of a clean up for winter

I'm sure someone can give you better advice on this than me. From what i remember there's three bolts to take the air filter elbow off, then four bolts that go down through the throttle body, i just removed the four bolts then cleaned everything off with a bit of petrol and a rag. You can buy carb cleaner from places like halfords which would surely do a better job though, and to do it properly it would be better to remove the vacuum hoses and such but i've never done it that intensely

Petrol / WD40 works well for cleaning the throttle body
