ADZ engine issue - Diz failure?
« on: 18 October 2010, 01:26 »
Hi Guys,

First post and I am asking for help!

Been trawling this site for a while, and the tech reference section has been a great for helping me keep my mk3 on the road!

I just wonder if someone can give some objective advice on an issue with the golf.

It stopped running the other day and refused to start.  No spark from the coil lead, checked the coil and ignition module (with a new unit) and that was fine.  As its an ADZ engine it dosnt have the 30 relay, or a crank angle sensor so those are ruled out.

Which leads me to think that the failure is the hall sensor in the distributor?

Before I blow some cash on a new distributor can anyone advise that a hall sensor failure would prevent the coil from firing.  I connected the coil up to a multimeter and it was showing 12v with the ignition on, but on cranking I couldnt see any pulse signal - would that confirm its the hall sensor?

Thanks in advance

Cheers

James

does your rev counter jiggle when cranking? also fuel pump, does it prime with ignition and run while engine is cranking?

Hi, thanks for the response :)

From what I recall the gauges would jiggle on cranking.

I did listen out to see if I could hear the fuel pump prime but couldnt hear anything - but then saying that I dont ever recall the fuel pump making a sound when the ignition was on (all my other cars are really noticible).

Suppose I should put my ear to the tank and flick the switch to see if it is.

If the fuel pump relay is dead, does that prevent also the coil from firing?

Cheers

James

yeah the fuel pump should prime with ignition and run when car is cranking, it might be a bit quiet tho. its under the round metal disc on the boot floor. if you pull the fuel pump relay bridge the 2 large pins with a bit of chunky wire and the pump should prime :)

Solved - repaced the diz and got a spark back.  Looks like the hall sensor failed and then cuts the spark to the coil.

Only issue now is after setting the timing I have managed to loose the bell housing plug.  Arse.
