1 - Above the pedals.

2 - It's a obd-II connector, nothing like anything else that will plug into your computer for the car end and then a USB connector to go into your laptop.

3 - cheap ones just don't work, go for a proper Ross Tech VCDS cable.

4 - VCDS cables act as a license key for the software which is free to download from Ross Tech

5 - I will dig out a guide to data logging in a bit.

Hi guys I've managed to get some access to VAGCOM but need some advice. I might be able to borrow a cable off someone on this forum but I am also thinking about buying my own cable.
Its actually an EOBD II connector as we are in Europe. It a purple socket just under the dash. What a poor forum you can't add a picture directly, so here is one I posted on another forum. No it won't show from photobucket as I've said before.

Where is the OBD PORT!!!??

Now I've been after one of these cables for a long time. As its been said the ones of eBay are not really compatible with the newer VW's. There was one on there a couple of months ago for £35. I asked are you sure its compatible with 2010 VW as advertised? He said I can't garrantee it so don't buy it.

I contacted Ross-Tech to ask them the differences and which one is best.
The HEX style interface will cover all VW/Audi/Seat/Skoda from 1995 through the 2010 model years.  The MicroCAN is designed specifically to work with the MKV and MKVI platform vehicles.  As such, it starts with the 2005 model year and goes to the 2010 year.

This still isn't clear to me, do I need HEX-USB+CAN or MicroCAN? I asked do you have any distributors in the UK. distributors. There kit is HEX-USB+CAN $349 and MicroCAN $249.

Uwe from Ross-Tech joined one of my other forums and he still didn't answer my query.

I would stick with Ross-Tech when I decided I needed one.

MicroCAN will do only the newer CANBUS based cars so 2004 onwards i.e MK5

If order to scan ALL VAG group cars, new and old you need the HEX-CAN-USB - it depends on your requirements

I've had this one for 3+ years and its scanned everything from MK4's to Passat's, Tourans and Audi's

Well worth the investment for the genuine lead as if you have a light come up you've saved yourself £80 by being able to start identifying the problem yourself and not having the dealer relieve you of your hard earned cash :nerd:

Also you can help out family and friends, forum members etc in exchange for beer tokens thus helping to recuperate the initial outlay

Well they quoted

So what is the main difference, what will one do that the other won't?

The only difference is they won't work on anything pre 2005.  Functionality is exactly the same

Fairly simple really

Yes you can use the HEX-CAN-USB  one on all the cars older than 2004. Thats what you pay the extra $100 for.
The micoCAN you cannot.

Best way to think of it is that the HEX-CAN-USB is backwards compatiable were the microCAN is not.

Anyone know were the best place to get the HEX-CAN-USB from is at the moment?
