First time remove gearbox questions
« on: 14 October 2010, 21:14 »
Hi all, I gonna remove and refit new clutch that I will do it for first time here question I need to know before I prepare to remove gearbox.

When remove gearbox, do gearbox bolts need to replaced?
Clutch bolt will be replaced?
Does bolt snap off if I tried too hard to turn?

Which is good quailty clutch kit for vw 1.6 turbo diesel?

Thanks

Rob

you will need an m8 spline key to undo the bolts that hold the inner cv joints to the output flanges of the gearbox, gsf do a really long one but ive no idea what it costs, the bolts holding the box to the engine will be fine to re-use unless they have mangled heads, i think you are supposed to replace the ones holding the flywheel on although ive not bothered and you should definitely find the correct torque setting for them.

when you are trying to get the box back in it will be a pain in the balls if its agti one as the bigger output flanges are just the right size to get in the way and i always seem to end up with a driveshaft that fouls on the chassis long before its anywhere near bolting back up. last time i got the right 'ump with it and craned the engine out, bolted it all up then wheeled it back in (i took all the front panel and lights etc off) which sounds like a nightmare but its the way im going to keep doing it i think, much easier access to everything and not really such a lot more work, plus while its in bits you get to inspect all the bits you never normally see ;)
