iirc, the driver has solid discs 239mm dia, with wider pads, and an 8v GTi (early 16v) has 239mm dia vented discs with slimmer pads. So if you get GTi discs and pads, they will fit, as the calipers are the same. I think.

I had 14's steels over my 256 brakes last winter. So should be fine

You can buy gti 8v discs and pads and they will fit straight to your 239mm driver install. It's the same apart from a vented disc on the 8v gti and slimmer pads as rob said above.

check the calipers you have now, if they have VWII stamped on em you can fit vented gti discs & pads straight on. if they dont you need to change the calipers and 1 of the mounting bolts too. i cant remember if the 1.6 got VWII calipers or not off top of me head

I think I got my last lot from GSF, and im very happy with the performance of them (no fade issues, and respond well when they get warm). I dont know who to reccomend tho, as im sure the quality will vary between manufacturers, and you want good brake parts! So it may not be advisable to buy the cheapest available if the brand has little or no reputation. GSF, Euro Car Parts, and VW spares are perhaps the usual suspects to check, maybe even good old e-bay too.
