The mk4 was nicely designed and solidly built but the fancy rubber coated plastic has a horrible habit of peeling, I've known a couple lowish mileage mk4 GTIs have their seat bolsters collapse (the early ones with Recaros were lovely though) and the awful plastic wood cracks for no reason.
However, the parcel shelf is an excellent design, I'll give you that!
I reckon the mk7 will see more cost cutting and attempts at weight reduction.
Still, I'll have probably been made redundant by then so won't have to worry about it!!!

What we now need is for someone who has a friend or relative with a mk4 to compare parcel shelves with their mk6 to see if any bits can be easily modified/bodged to fit. Then all it takes is a visit to a scrap yard.......
