Mk3 Golf GTI 8v

Hi all,

Wondering if anyone has any answers/ experience knowledge in the following areas as my beloved R Reg GTI is not running so well these days. She has just recently passed her MOT but now seems to struggle. Had an oil and filter change but made no difference. I have also noticed the following problems driving back from London over the weekend.

1. Car surges (feels like it is running out of pertrol) when you hit about 70 mph. Thought it might be due to the airfilter and would changing sparks plugs help?

2. Shakes like hell, think tracking requires attention. I live in Norwich if anyone knows anyone who could take a look.

3. Windows don't work, err well... only passenger side - switch problems for electric windows. Are these a normal problem with Golf GTI?

4. A funny knocking/ clanning noise from the rear. Don't think it's the exhaust. Mainly persists when you're going along and put your foot down to take over in lower gears - it clunks for a sec. Clunks sometimes if you pull off on a slight climb to the right too. She has all round coils on if this makes any different.

And finally - I would like to do something with the engine. I want to get her to preform alot better. Pickup and maybe mid-range lift would be great. Any ideas or advice on what I should do?

Thank alls

Welcome to the site.

1) Search the older threads on here

2) Shaking could be lots of things, wheel balance, missing spiggot ring on the alloy, worn bushes don't think it would be your tracking.

3) see no1

4) Rear top mounts, exhaust banging on the rear beam maybe.

As for making it quicker not much you can do to be honest.

Latest update - found the surge problem. It was a slit air hose from airbox to top of engine, engine to bottom, which has now been replaced.

Shaking - since the coilovers went on the tracking has not been corrected so would anyone persume this might be the cause?

Wanted - anyone have a spare drivers side (double window button) swicth for the electric windows?

Cheers all. :)

Don't think tracking would cause it to be honest, missing wheel balance weight or buckled wheel maybe.

Shaking is more like a wooble on. Steering wheel is slightly of balance but all the tyres are fine. No wearing on inside or outside. I'm clueless on this...

Oh, anyone with a spare air breather pipe?
