Problems with car
« on: 28 January 2005, 18:42 »
Hi all i am looking for some advice on the following faults with my mk3 8v gti. Any help with advice would be appreciated.
1. When i purchased the car 6 mths ago the heat shields were rattling i was told. This was not the case as it was the back box and the one next to it. now i am getting another rattle that i thought was a heat shield but am told by a mecanic its the CAT on its way out. My cat is basically under the handbrake and i was wondering what the best thing to do, replace, remove or what???

2. My car had a new clutch 25k ago going by the receips i recieved with the car, This clutch is slipping like mad mainly in 3,4,5 if you plant your foot it just slips and if you ease off and plant again it keeps slipping. Can these clutches be ajusted or is it something else.

Any help would be appreciated as you can see these are both expensive jobs that i really cant afford to do.

Clutch should easily be adjusted. After 25k, it shouldn't be on the way out unless it was a re-conditioned one or a salvaged clutch.

Don't know anything about your pussy (CAT) problems though!!!!

There is a heatshield under the CAT. Rip that off first and see if you still got the noise.

Then check the heatshield up by the manifold. ITs welded to the downpipe and if its that then nowt much you can do other than put up with it.

Of course your friendly garage is gonna say its a replacement CAT - money in the bank!

Clutch - thought they were self adjusting? If you got the reciept take it back, may still have some warranty left.

Twice failure!
I. If fitted as standard then it must be present and correctly fitted to your car.
2. Your car will fail on emmissions.

Are you getting a nasty smell from the CAT? If you hit it with a hammer can you hear anything rattling inside?

Len what is happening is at about 1500 revs it really rattles and then stops. The guy who done the mot went down the pit whilst i reved it and said the cat was on its way out. It does not sound like a heat shield rattling or like baffles when they go. strange noise. every time you come to stop it rattles and then again as you pull away, its loud enough for people on the pavement to look around and stare .

sounds like a loose exhaust to me, i hvae had it happen a few times on my mk3, due to the amount of speedbumps i have to contend with in my area.

I would get under the car and check all the heatshields.
As for the clutch, what does the pedal operation feel like?

Clutch pedal feels like any normal pedal no sticking or anything but biting right at the top. Is there no ajustment at all.

Clutch cable will be self adjusting.
Sounds like the self adjusting mech is knackered, try replacing the cable.
