bad misfire, hardly any power!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

today i brought a 1997 mk3 gti 2.0i 8v


journey started off ok, about 30 mins later it wouldnt go over 3000k revs, lots of juddering and no power. put it in to 4th and was sort of ok.

another half hour passed, and it started loosing power in 2nd, and 1st. had to change up to 4th in low revs and managed to get home.

when i brought the car, he did point out a whining from the back end, which he said was the fuel pump. it dont seem to shut off, whines all the time.

i can start the car and it idles as it should.

just dont know what to do, any ideas?

fuel pump problems, possible, if its constantly going with ignition off.. thats bad, very bad.

But ... my answer to all problems on MK3 - Coil pack!!

Try changine the Fuel pump relay number 167, make sure it's a genuine one.

Also try cleaning the throttle body with lots of carb cleaner

Having spoken to a few vdub specialists and my mate in the dealers, he said the fuel pump relay failing is almost unheard of!   its usually the ECU relay (which gives fuel pump relay failure symptoms) But ECU relay would cause cutting out. 

Obviously for the price of a relay its worth trying the F/P but dont get your hopes up,  its a simple on off relay and the engine will simply die out if the relay switches off, I have been through much testing of relays etc.. after having issues with mine.

To be honest i would be looking down the route of ignition system, rotor arm, cap, leads, and plugs!  as i said before, coil pack is very common!   All of these things can cause a misfire, and often under load due to the spark being there... just very weak.
