Gearbox trouble
« on: 09 October 2010, 06:00 »
Hi, new to forum.

I have a Candy White GTI. I had a REVO stage 1 upgrade a couple months ago which is great and it now drives  with a bit more of the urgency that my MkV Gti had...

However before I fitted the REVO it had a problem with shuddering DSG and uneven idle. This has got progressively worse and now the car can lurch forward on it's own in low traffic and after some 'quick' driving when moving from 'S' back to 'D' there is sometimes a big bang from the engine area.

VW agree there's a problem and it is due to go back to them to fix under warranty. They have taken it for a test drive and now want it into their repair shop.

The man at the RobinHood Racing who installed the REVO says VW won't be able to detect it. As this could be a serious repiar I'm keen to make sure it is carried out under warranty

Does anyone know if the REVO can be detected? Should I/ Can I get it removed before the car goes back to VW for repair??

Hope you can help,

Many Tx

Does anyone know if VW will detect it

For one thing as soon as the tech's take it out for a test drive they will know that is been fettled.  The map won't show up on any of their normal diagnostic checks but it will be relatively easy for them, should they want to investigate further, to detect it by downloading the map to VW HQ in Germany.

Some dealers don't really care as they make money on warranty claims - VW HQ pays the bills.  But with DSG being such a new technology I think Germany does take quite an interest in any issues related to it so the issue might attract their attention.

To avoid any issues I would have the REVO taken off while this is investigated.  This should avoid raising any of the techs suspicions and carrying out any in depth investigation.  You should know that when REVO return a car to 'stock', the map they put on is their version of the OEM map, i.e. its not the true VW software (unlike Superchips where it is the genuine VW map thats put back on).  HTH

I would not take the risk myself. They imo will try and get out of a claim anyway they can. So they will say the map has put extra strain on the gearbox and caused the problem. Leaving you with iirc £1000+fitting bill  for a new  mechatronics unit for the DSG box (which sounds like the unit causing your problems)

+1+1+1 ....
Remove it. It's a no brainer. Don't give them any reasons to wriggle out.

Just looking at the REVO site it appears it changes the settings in the ecu. Even if you set it back to standard any changes that have been made will be logged by the ecu. VW can access all changes therefore as stated can dispute a warranty claim because its an unauthorise chip access. I would have thought thats the first thing they will check before doing any warranty repair work.

There are some chips that you plug in the loom that doesn't interfere with the ecu directly. You can unplug these and no one is the wiser. You will just have to take the risk that they don't dispute the claim because its been chipped.

Thanks for your opinions and advice. I think I'll try to get it removed. As VW have already inspected car  including test drive I'm hoping they'll repair without any further fuss.....

btw I should introduce my car properly so will try to set up some pics tomorrow.

To be fair to DSG..... :nerd: I had my MkV Gti with DSG for just over 3 yeras with not a glitch from the DSG and a TT with S-Tronic also for 3 years and both fault free. I do wonder if I've got a Friday afternoon Mk6 or maybe it just isn't as well built as the MkV as the  rumours say.......?
