they always have a gap even when brand new. if they didn't the upper cup would catch the bodywork and stop the wheels from turning properly. mine have around a 5m gap

A 5 meter gap??

A small gap is normal, but a larger gap is a sign of the mounts being past their service life.
It can still pass an MOT when they worn out.

Yeah, 5m would be pretty noticeable! It would be scary going under bridges.

  • Hello, my name is John and I'm a dub addict.
damn typos

yeah i didn't mean to imply just because you have a 5mm gap your mounts are fine, they can still be buggered even with a 'normal' gap. depends if its the rubber that's worn or if the bearings are damaged

edit: linky here showing some good pics:

top pic is about right, 2nd pic is buggered. if your gaps are uneven thats a givaway that one needs sorting. when you look though make sure the wheels are pointed straight ahead, if you put it on full lock the top plates will be at funny angles
