ABS Issue - Next step confirmation...
« on: 08 October 2010, 10:17 »
Well my ABS light was on (previous owner disconnected the loom I think) so I ran a VAG-COM scan - front left ABS sensor, resistance too high.

Went to check it out and noticed this:

So, I think it's safe to say that's something to do with the problem

I tested the resistance across the sensor at 1.03k Ohms so I believe that is correct.

Chasing the wiring back into the engine bay reveals a plethora of insulation tape and crimped connectors (starting to think this car might be a bit of a turkey), so I want to check the wiring is ok before I go replacing the sensor.

Question: Does the ABS system constantly send a current through the wiring when the ignition is on (allowing me to check current is getting down to the connector)? Or could I continuity test the +ve and -ve parts of the wire at various points along it (back towards the engine bay)?

At the moment the right rear locks up under heavy braking, sending the car sideways... so any help is appreciated!

When my front right sensor was eaten by the wheel it only showed up on vagcom and the ABS light on the side. When, twinned with that, I had exactly the same problem as you on my other side, the cables had been worn through, the handbrake light came on, constantly. Was VERY frustrating and therefore I just cut the cable above the wear. Been meaning to replace that......

Sounds like it could be something others have encountered too then...

So, your ABS system is non-functional at the moment then? Do the wheels lock up evenly or do you poo yourself under hard braking like me?

Regarding a replacement cable, I can't find one (haven't tried the stealers yet though, and don't really want to)... The rear sensors seem to come with one, but the fronts don't :(

Yeah ABS not working at the moment. Got a new sensor to fit on the front right, but I need to rewire both of the fronts. I tried scrapyard but it was difficult finding the same type of cable, mine had 2 wires, where as the ones at the scrapyard had an internal core wire and an external wire coat, like an aerial cable.

Cheers for the info! I'll have to try a scappy then I reckon... unless I can get handy with the soldering iron... Your car looks bloody tidy by the way from the pics in your sig!

Regarding testing the circuit, if anyone would be able to offer some help that would be awesome, just wanna try and weed out the problem asap as I need to get it sorted before next Weds if possible (track day)! Thanks.
