mk2 8v gti cutting out..choke??

Hi all after a bit of advice please. Can anyone explain to me how the cold running system on a fuel injected car works? :huh:
The situation: Had the car 3 yrs or so but for the last couple it has a tendacy to cut out. Now its taken me this long to work out that it only does it once on a journey and usually within the first couple of miles or 5 miles at the most. You`ll be driving along at 30-40 mile an hour and the car dies, flick the ignition switch and you can usually do a running start and its fine. Wont do it again on that journey but if you stop for half hour or so it will do it again. Doesnt cut out in summer at all or very rarely but now its getting colder again its playing up. Im thinking there must be a relay or similar somewhere that tells the car its at the right tempreture and cuts the choke out and im thinking that this maybe cutting the ignition out aswell but im clutching at straws. Ive changed the ignition switch (what a b!tch to do that) incase it was that but no joy..Anybody shed some light for me please??its getting a tad dangerous and the missus is bending my ear :sad:

first port of call if its deffo temperature related would be the blue temp sender   its blue .. had an electrical plug going into it and is in a hose tht comes out the front of the engine :P


£13 for a brand new one from gsf or euro

Pretty sure I changed that when I fist had the car and related to another problem but will give it a shot thanks.

 Would I be able to test that by switching the wires over to the other tempature sender next to it?

jus tpull it off when the car is running ... no change ... its fubared
altho i recently swapped mine oiut and it cured a problem i was having  but when i had tried just pulling the wire off it it did make a change so obviously wasnt totally fecked just on its way out

Ok new blue tempo sender and still the same. Anything else related to the cold running I can check?

Is it a genuine vag sender, the ones from ecp/gsf are total garbage.

You didn't metion it, bu i'm assuming (from the blue sender) that it is a digi? Follow rj's guide amd report bak

Its from GSF but with the same problem so highley unlikely its gonna be two giving me the same symptom. The car dosent need setting up it runs sweet as a nut, no dieing out at junctions, no air leaks now it just cuts out. You drive at 30-40mph and bang its dead.Most often in exactly the same place every day. It only does it the once per journey and its worse in cold. There has gotta be some relay or switch somewhere thats faulty?? Pump relay??

If it happens in the same place, then its more likely to be temp. related.

As Ben has said it has to be temp related, I would still try another sender.

Getting desperate now chaps :sad:
 new vw temp sender and same problem..Its getting worse and worse now, cutting out 3+ times on a 6 mile journey is the norm and the biatch usually on a bad bit of road. In the last week its now cutting out and refusing to start for a few minutes. I hadnt used the car for a few days because of the snow but took it out today and broke down 1/4 mile from home and refused to start. Managed to get a plug lead off and no spark so then took coil lead off dizzy and no spark from that either. Went home to get some tools and when I got to car it started and managed to get it home again. Change the coil to an old one I had laying about and also an old dizzy cap and rotary arm but no difference. What could it be? Few things running through me head at mo and thats the immobiliser (one you have a key fob with an electrical conector that you slot in before it will start) ecu??..really desperate now for any advice on where to go from here. Its starting but I dont trust it to go anywhere :sad:
