If you have 312mm front brakes, you will need at least 16" wheels.

In all honesty there will not be that many 16" 5x112 steels around, so you would probably be better off searching for 16" or 17"alloys. There will be loads of scruffy ones with worn tyres on around for not much money.

I would guess something from a Audi may fit.

Mk5 steels are 15" and are cheap enough. I'm sure 15" is enough to fit over standard GTI brakes. Not sure where you would get 16" steels, probably one of the bigger Audis as Wayne said, but the 16" mk5 sportline wheels are available cheap second hand.

15" wheels WILL NOT fit over 312mm brakes.

Most steels will be 15", there are very few 16's. My Passat has a 16" steel spare, but I wouldn't have thought there are many people wanting to upgrade their spares.

As I said before, scruffy alloys ought to be cheap enough.

Heres VW recomendation for winter wheels

Or the option 17 winter alloys wheels. (notice they are not as wide as the monzas)

Mk6 GTI  &  Mk1 GTI
34 years of GTI ownership.
