Best sander for rubbing paint down?
« on: 06 October 2010, 13:00 »
Ive recently bought a few body panels(tailgate, bumper, wings) in the wrong colour and im planning on rubbing them down and prepping them ready for someone to spray them.
Im just wondering what type pf sander would be best?
DA orbital Sander 6" or 3"?

Rectangular

Triangular

I have a compressor or would electric be a better option?

Also what grade pads do i need? From start to finish(inc rubbing filler down)

I know i will have to finish off with wet and dry but im unsure about the flatting off of the existing mulberry paint.

Cheers in advance :)

3" one will be better for harsher angles and compressor one will be good or electric it doesn't matter really..

You will need a fair few grades from start to finish tbh..
Mk4 Golf GTI anniversary and mk6 golf tdi :)

I had a feeling the 3" would be better as it would be easier to get into the hard to reach places. They are a lot more expensive than the 6" for some reason?
Still not sure about the grades of paper though.from 60-600 grit?

Use the 6 inch DA sander, it will get in to most areas, rubbing with accuracy, rather than a small disc that will dig out areas, and leave a poor ripple effect to a freshly painted panel
for general sanding, you want 180 grit, use only 120/80 grit around repairs, then finish with 180... small intricate areas should be done by hand, with 180 grit and/or red Scotchbrite,
The above will leave panel ready for 4/5 coats of 2k filler primer...

Exactly what i wanted to hear Thom thanks very much.Come to think of it a 6" would make more sense being a larger area rather than gouging stuff out with a smaller diameter disc.
Thanks again.
