can't get fifth gear!

Got given a mk2 which is now on the road
But can't get fifth gear! All the other gears are fine,no
Crunching. Any ideas?

is there much play in the in the selector when in any of the other gears... could just be worn bushes in the rods.  cheap fix, even cheaper, may just need realigning

i was waiting for someone to come up with a top gear gag
the selector seems fine and changed some of the bushs on the rods.
i`l have a better look tomorrow.

there is a selector rod for fifth gear, a small white one, check that first

pop the rods off and try engadge it one the box, if the box will select it then the linkages are out, if it won't it's ether a 4 spd box or it was a 5 spd box that someone ran low on oil

That would suck donkey balls if someone stuck a 4SPd box in to save money
