as ive learned from a thread i posted a while ago there is no real way of making my 1.4 any more powerful or faster, so im looking to give it some noise, i aint exactly the richest guy in the word and im not a fan of big exhausts or anything so.....

i was thinking of fitting a standard gti 8v backbox, mainly because its the same centre bore as my system and has the twin barrels at the back so it looks alot better, and then i was thinking of deleting my midbox to take some of the silence away 

so a few questions,
1. will this even sound good/how loud will it be?
2.will it make my car lose power? (after 15 years there are somewhat less than the 70horses that vw blessed it with, i dont wanna go killing any more ponies off lol)
3.would there be any emmitions issues?
4. could anyone give me a rough price as to how much this will cost, like how much am i expecting to pay for the backbox and even if the do a midbox deleter pipe (if thats what its called haha)
5.any fuel consumption issues?

i thought in theory this would make my acr perform a bit better because the midbox would be gone, so less resistance/more breathing space and i would of thought the gti backbox would have been less restrictive too, but im probably wrong lol

1. Not really, standard systems weren't made for performance. If you want a louder car you really need to go mild or stainless steel system. Getting rid of centre silencer will make the car very loud (if you have an aftermarket backbox.

2. As you said in your theory, better breathing and less restriction so should perform better....So you think. Engines need backpressure and without it midrange will suffer a lot. It depends how big the backbox is and whether you have a cat or not.

3. No, exhaust has nothing to do with emissions.

4. Pipe to replace silencer costs around £30-£40 on ebay/internet, depends where you buy it. A standard GTI backbox will cost about £20 or so second hand, about £70 new. A stainless steel backbox will cost around £70 second hand. Sometimes you can buy the backbox and centre pipe for that price if you look hard enough for a bargain, I recently sold a small backbox and centre pipe system for £70 odd.

I would check its the same bore first.....(the 2.0 should be a larger bore but its not uncommon to find the larger downpipe fitted from the cat back using a larger sleeve)

If it has a larger 1.8/2.0 downpipe and back box then a sports exhaust won't make much difference!! except loudness and then you will loose lower down power!

jokes, so would i lose power even if i didnt fit the larger bore parts, what if i only fitted a backbox, all i want is a nice rumble lol oh and for it not to lose power ><

you wont loose power......you'll just move the rev range a bit higher (less power lower down but more top end)

And now I'm running this:


This is a large backbox, large centre silencer and no cat.


You could say I've tried my fair share of exhaust systems on the car. Standard was nice, original GTI rumble. Peco backbox was also nice, still GTI rumble, but just a tad louder, however it did sound very "airy". System with small backbox and no centre silencer was mega loud when giving it some and very deep and bassy on the low and midrange. Lots of popping, lots of rumbling, lots of backfiring, and possibly some flames too although I wouldn't know as I cant see the exhaust. This system would sound the alarm of a lot of cars at a car park.
Current system is a bit more civilized. Quiet at motorway speeds and when driving normally, nice rumble on idle and through the rev range, tinny at mid range and just plain sweet at high revs. Off throttle it will pop nicely, sometimes with a pretty loud pop, sometimes just rumble. If I'm giving it some it will pop when changing gear. I've not got a video of it but I'll try and get one at some point.
