GTD performance?
« on: 28 September 2010, 19:39 »
My boss picks up his GTD on Thursday and is keen to know how much better it is than his current 06 A3 2.0TDI.
I think both are 170 BHP but what will the golf have over the A3?
Do they have the same sort of engine map or power delivery?

Any info will be gratefully received

( will try and blag a test drive to confirm )

It will depend on the age of the A3, if its the old 170bhp with the PD engine then he will find the newer 170bhp CR engine a bit quicker but a hell of a lot smoother and more refined (for a diesel).

The CR is also a better engine for tuning as well

Ive been in the A3 and it does go quite well, Im sure its an early 06 as the 4 year deal was up in June when he ordered it.
The car was unavailable for test drive due to the low numbers in the UK(?)
but I talked him into it
(Nearly talked him into a Scirocco )
Looking forward to a spin round the estate

Dunno if it will do 120 in 4th, i doubt it unless its been ramapped, mine does about 115 ish... But it picks up from 30 and pulls round to that speed nicely. Heres mine:

Dont rise to it. He can do 120 all day long, which he in fact wont be doing as he wont have his license for long doing that sort of speed on a regular basis.

As the others have said you boss might have had a PD engined A3 but lets be real here, they both have the same sorts of power and I really don't think he will see much difference. Maybe a small placebo effect with his Golf being a new car.

I ran VW PD's for nearly 5 years and have driven a few VW CR models now. The engine is quieter, but the main benifit is the power delivery is so much smoother and progressive now and it had far less turbo lag. Its less of a wiz bang engine than the PD's

Depends though about whether he is manual or not. My DSG GTI does about 110-115 IIRC and then it automatically shifts up to 5th at the redline.

But I might also add that this is not an indication of performance. My previous Mini Cooper 1.6 with only 120hp could do 124mph in 4th whereas my GTI shifts up at 115mph. If you are wanting an indication of performance then tell your mate at work to see how far past 120 he can go. And then ask a GTI driver. You may find quite a difference.

Bingo!
The torque delivery is certainly different...PD has a higher initial bang, then tails off.
CR is more linear as Snoopy says.

PD is smokier too...and noisier.

Reducing my Golf count by the week....
..but gaining motorcycles.
