Any help lads?
« on: 25 January 2005, 18:49 »
Hi!  I'm new to the forum and love my Golf GTi 8v.  I recently paid ?500 for it as my mate was after a quick sale.  It had rust on the boot/window seal (collision + sh!te workmanship) but i bought a p-reg hatch from a scrappy (mint condition delivered for ?70) had it sprayed and put on the car.  I paid 320 for this and a new quarter panel and sprayjob.  The car looks mint now and drives well.  I lowered it 35mm and put on a scorpion exhaust and clear repeaters and i'm well chuffed!

Only thing is- it's got a bit of a drinking problem.  Average a tank a week (?30) doing only local driving.  MFA displays around 14 miles per gallon on startup creeping up to an average of 24-26 miles per gallon on short journeys.  I drove about 40 miles like a grandad and managed to get 36 mpg but on a long journey it'll average about 28-32mpg.  Any input here?

Also, it clicks when i reverse and since lowering it (i did it myself- 5 hours!!) no one can seem to stop it from veering to the left slightly.  I'm a perfectionist and want to be able to let go of the steering wheel and drive a perfect straight line..

Does anyone know how to sort the clicking out without having to change the gearbox.  If not- where can i find a cheap but good gearbox to sort the prob out.

I'd like to show you all a pic or two but cant seem to add the file!

Nor sure about the clicking mate.

As for the fuel comsumption, sounds about right to me, I average around 30mpg around town, and 36-38 on along run, you do however not say how many miles you get out of ?30 of petrol.

The veering to the left sounds to me that you tracking / camber is now way out due to you having lowered your car. I would advse you taking your car to a competent garage to get the tracking / camber looked at.

You need to host the pictures on some webspace, or by using photobuket.com, then add the link to the picture in your post, if you want further guidence or me to host the pics for you let me know, either here or via pm.

Hope this helps with at least a few of your queries.

Paul

Hi Paul,

I try and get some pics added.  I rather hastily bought an engine from ebay for ?190.  p-reg 55k.  I thought it was a great price but then decided after getting the engine back to mine that it was gonna be an arse to fit it or expensive for someone else to fit it!  I resold it on ebay for 200 notes..?10 profit!

I wanna try and get the car as mint as poss.  I've already spent ?1300 on improvements even in the knowing that i'll never make this money back if i ever sold the car.  I bought an induction kit aswell.  I didn't get on with it at first as she kept idling funny at some lights for example.  I bought a bigger air inlet hose and fed it up through the vents at the bottom of the car and treated the engine with STP stuff and now it idles fine.  It sounds absolutely lush with the exhaust and induction kit- especially in multi storey car parks with the echo's!!  Sounds a bit sad- but i like it!!

I'd like to know about what other people have done to their mark three's modding wise- i think they have the potential to look even more stunning than mark two's- i actually prefer them.

The car will pull to the left because the tracking is out, however the camber may also need to be reset, but its unlikely to be causing the car to pull to one side.
Does it only click in reverse?

I am pretty sure the camber on your car will be out mate, as mine was severly out when I had mine dropped, you will soon notice if it is out as you will find your tyres quickly looding there tread very unevenly.

the clicking in reverse is a common fault on the mk 3's i think. my brother has the same problem on his.... he's been told that the box needs replacing but at ?350+ he is a bit reluctant to do it. i dunno if there is a way of sorting it without replacing the box but if you find any possible fixes let me know...

mpg sounds a bit right.. i got 300 miles out of ?42 quid (recent post) driving as i do normally, which varies from hard to pensioner stylee.

currently rattling:
1. To make or emit a quick succession of short percussive sounds.
2. Not anymore - Now rumbling

Had the tracking done the day after i lowered it.  Had the camber sorted to.  A week later i went back to have it redone as it was still out.  He had another go and i also put two new tyres on to see if that made a difference.  I had it done a third time when i drove away and it was still out- this time i told him to do a proper job as i didn't wanna go back again!!  It still seems off though- he mentioned that my bottom mount was a bit dodgy and this would affect the allignment as when i accelerated, the engine was moving and putting pressure on the drive shaft.??

Would be nice to see some pics if anyone out there has any modded vdubs??
