Help for a newbie!
« on: 27 September 2010, 21:47 »
Just become the recent proud owner of an '09 GTI, loving it so far and finding the forum excellent for tips and advice. I have one slight trim niggle that I would appreciate a bit of help with. The back of the armrest does not sit flush with with the rear cup holder section on one side. If I give it a good thump it clicks back in but after a few moments it pops back up again. It's as if it hasn't been aligned properly when fitted together.

I am paranoid that if I try and take it apart to re-alignit, I may damage some of the fixings (if they are not already damaged) and am not sure how best to proceed! I have got a Halfords trim removal tool but not had a chance to have a go yet. Any advice before I have a go and risk making a simple niggle a bigger job than it ought to be?!

Feel a real k**b now, didn't even think about warranty, bought it from a dealer in Essex (although it is an Edinburgh registered motor - and I am an exiled Scot!) and didn't want to have to take it all the way back there but I will take it to local dealer. Suppose I thought it was such a minor thing that they wouldn't be bothered with it but then it is a fault and it is under warranty!

Thanks guys!

I had a fog light go while I was on the continent.  Took the car to a dealer there and after I'd figured out "Nebellicht" they took it away for 15 minutes and wheeled it back fixed.  No charge.

I still don't know how a bulb could have gone when I still haven't figured out how to switch the bloody fog lights on....

Might have been the night the car spent on an open deck of a ship on the North Sea scared it silly.

Ok, so took the car to local dealer and surprise surprise they won't touch it under warranty. Apparently it must have come about as a result of someone taking it apart for some reason and not as a result of a manufacturing fault. He gave some drivel about trim claims having to be within a few months of new and that as they have to send 87% of warranty faults to VW there would be nothing to show them! As I bought the car 2nd hand and they weren't the supplying dealer they clearly are not going to go out of their way to help.

Looks like I am going to have to attack it myself at the weekend. The guy told me that I would need to unscrew the rear drinks holder and then the section to the rear of the front armrest would slide up and off but he didn't will me with confidence - has anyone ever had to do that? I am worried that a clip is damaged but hopefully it just needs squared up and all will be fine!

Whilst I was at the dealer I asked to log the exhaust rattle that I have (the same as many report on here at just over 2000rpm) and i took the guy out with me, he heard it clear as day and said it was a normal characteristic of the engine and if I thought that was bad (it does't bother me too much) then I should hear the 1.4tsi as it is alot worse (oh and that every 2.0 petrol Peugeot also has the same characteristics)!! Anyway apparently it can't be logged for warranty purposes but at least I have reported it I suppose.

Interestingly the dealer group say they have an R chipped to +410bhp - must be a handful!

Spot on Mike, great help, looks like it should be straightforward enough. The dealer was right by the looks of things! Hopefully all intact and she will fit back together nice and flush!

...thanks for the Velcom am1w!!
