Loose something under GTi bonnet
« on: 26 September 2010, 14:07 »
Hi,

There is a strange noise coming from under the bonnet of my Mk5 Golf GTi.

The noise sounds like something has come loose and is flapping about in the wind.  There is no sound at low speeds but from 40 mph onward it becomes more persistent.  The sound seems to emminate from quite high up on the drivers side but under the bonnet.
Strangely, things seem to calm down after I corner, briskly, to the right and worsen if I do the same to the left.

I have had a look for anything obvious but can not spot the source of the noise.  The car has passed it's MOT since the noise started last Thursday.

I would be grateful for any pointers on what the source of this irritation might be and how to fix it.

Thanks

I has a similar sounding problem after an oil change, the tech didn't tighten the wind deflector under the engine correctly, so once at speed the thing would flap. It was not hanging down justa few turns loose, after tighening it up the problem stopped.

The MOT guy may have pulled the cover down during inspection and caused to to loosen, it may just need tightening up.

I think the worst time to have a heart attack is during a game of charades. Especially if your teammates are bad guessers.

^^ As above worth checking.  I had a noise which was driving me mad for a few months - I was convinced it was coming from behind the glovebox but it turned out one of the wheel arch lining bolts was loose and the noise was being transmitted into the car.  I had the dash in pieces twice trying to track it down before I discovered this of course

This is my first post. hello to you all!
I bought my MK5 GTI last March and have loved every min of the 20k miles i have done since.

Could be your front right wheel bearing.
My front left bearing went during the summer. I experienced the same noise pattern. The noise disappears when you turn right because the cars weight is transfered to the good side and vice versa.

I had mine fixed under warranty, but i think it's a relatively cheap fix.

Thanks for all your replies.  I got to the bottom of the problem.  I found a business card wedged between the bonnet and the scuttle panel.  I didn't see it when I orginally checked but after running my hand along the panel I found it.

I reckon that it would have been placed under the windscreen wiper and I wouldn't hae seen it from the inside, what with the wipers in their standby position below the level of the dash.
