Need Help - Car Locked in Place
« on: 26 September 2010, 04:55 »
I hope someone can help me with this. After a day or two of not driving my Mk 6 Golf GTI, when I try to drive off there is a loud sound before the car pushes off. I'm not sure but it seems like the handbrake is stuck. It never happens though when I drive the car on consecutive days. Has this happened to anyone else?

Thanks for the help.

If it's parked outside in the damp with the handbrake on, it could be the rear pads binding onto the disks. Nothing to worry about really.

nothing to worry about mate, just your brakes. Once you apply them at your first junction it will clear them. Happens to me on every car I have owned when leaving it for a few days.

agree with comments from other Golf drivers.

I had a GT TDI and now the MK6 GTI and if I leave it for more than 24hrs there is often a loud sqeaking noise for a second as I pull away.

This also happens after you have washed the car, its the handbrake sticking ,i park mine on my drive and let it roll forward a little before i reverse off this does the trick.

Could also be the hill hold?
Does it usually happen when you pull off on a hill?

Has happened with every car I have owned.
You should go to the auctions and see the cars that have been sitting for a few days.
If they are parked on gravel, some time only one wheel breaks free and the other drags.
Its just the handbrake binding as others have mentioned.

It's why my father always told me never to apply the handbrake when parking a car in the garage.  If for any reason it won't start, you'll have a helluva job pushing it out.

If it's out on the road, you may have no option but to engage the handbrake.  But at least you can get at it with jump leads.
