hiya all, have a odd issue, 1.4 AEX !CURED!
« on: 24 September 2010, 10:52 »
hiya, now i have a odd issue with my 1.4 AEX golf engine.
first of all, every now and again ill be accelerating from 40 in 4th and it will behave like there is no fuel, followed later by a random stall, its VERY intermittent, so i cleaned the throttle body and changed the dizzy changed the thermostat and housing and sensors. the only two things that worry me ish are ...
1. i pulled the relay that makes the door open buzz. (does this do anything other than buzz?)
2 i have emulsified oil in the pipe that goes from a stange lump on the back of the engine block to the air filter box, ill link to my facebook album with the two pics in, help please

also want to add, my engine oil is CLEAN as you like  and i am not loosing any water.

many thanks guys and grls

CURE!!! it was a combination of a split in the crank breather pipe and a bad earth from coil to injector rail AND timing on dizzy was way off! now ticking over at 850rpm slow and steady, no hunting stalling laggin or owt! :D

Is that not a breather pipe on the back???.Also it could be the hall sensor

it appears so., the fact emulsified oil is in that pipe tells me its an oil breather, but i just found a pic of a 1.4 AEX and there also seems to be a water pipe going down under the inlet manifold into this odd big black plastic box where the oil breather pipe comes out, the thing that is confusing me is if there is a seal gone in that black box then why is it just that pipe thats emulsified and not the rest of the sump.

hall sensor???

Yea thats a breather and its common for them to fill up with gunk on the AEX!

As for your problem,  The buzzer relay is just a buzzer,  so its not that, Possible your Start up relay is on its way out (Aka ECU Relay)  Its unusual for a fuel pump relay to fail as its a very simple relay but they do from time to time, so thats a possibility.  Otherwise and more realistically its going to be down to a sensor,  What state is your coil pack in?  They can cause a missfire under load or to cause it to cut out (usually when damp)

ermm.. Ignition switch?  Unlikely as it would be more random, but a wiggle of the key may cut out or bring it back to life, so check that.

But..  as said before sounds very much like a sensor issue.

ok so thanks for replying,
after posting i decided to look at my sparkys, utterly conviced i had changed them, only to find them in a horrific state (it turns out i had changed the ones on my better halfs polo who has the single point AEX lump and my memory got it all mixed up) so i changed the sparks, Now it runs better but is now ticking over between 100 and 2100 rpm! i adjusted the throttle cable and checked my dizzy timing, but im sure its a sensor, now the plug are clean the issue is becoming a bit clearer, the engine heats up, then after a totally random amount of time it will stall and even more randomly it will loose power when crossing the 2000-2500 rev range. now i went through this forum however most issues that are similar refer to sensors that i dont have, however i need to identify certain sensors, like the one screwed into the side of the inlet manifold.  what number is the ECU and fuel relay? ill run a test on them today, ive checked all my wires for breaks and they are fine. The coil is unknown condition to me, it starts fine everytime, and even after it cuts out it starts immediatly. ill replace the coil if the relay replacement had no effect.
unless someone had a quick way i can find out.
damn car. i love it and ii have to say after rescuing it from a chav (who butchered it, put a huge exhaust on it, to find it ran like sh*t only then to completly retard the timing to compensate F**ktard) its been good to me, untill recently,
id like to get it sorted (also to note it was doing 45mpg now doing 30) before MOT.

I got coilovers coming next week. looking forward to that!
(was £44 cheaper for me to get coil overs then standard suspension!)

thanks all
